Collective Building of a Harmonious Society through Compassion

CCB Handed Over Customer & Employee Donations to Special Olympics Shanghai

On October 3rd, a ceremony was held in Shanghai for the handing over of donations CCB had collected to the Special Olympics World Summer Games 2007.  CCB vice president Fan Yifei handed over 550,000 yuan in donation contributed by its employees and customers to the Special Olympics Shanghai Games Executive Committee.

Attending this ceremony were Special Olympics International interim president Jay Emmett, Shanghai Special Olympics chairman Shi Derong, Bank of America chief marketing officer Anne Finucane and CCB supervisor Ning Liming.

In October 2006, when CCB and Bank of America announced together in Shanghai that they would jointly sponsor the Special Olympics World Summer Games 2007, they had become the only financial partners and hosting banks of the Games in China.

In the ceremony, Fan Yifei points out that although the sum of 550,000 yuan is small in comparison with the US$ 200,000 donated by CCB, the fact that it represents the generosity of its customers and the sincerity of its employees has given it a special significance.  He says that, by virtue of its continuous promotion of the sporting spirit of equality, acceptance and constant striving for improvement, the quadrennial Special Olympics World Summer Games has evolved from merely a special games event to one in which the community at large shares joy, confidence and courage with individuals with intellectual disabilities.  The 2007 games is the first time for Special Olympics World Summer Games to be held in Asia and in a developing country.  By sponsoring this event, CCB hopes that it can join hands with people from all quarters of society to arouse the public’s awareness of the Special Olympics and its athletes, thereby contributing towards better understanding and better care of individuals with intellectual disabilities.

In addition to sponsoring the Special Olympics through leverage of its professional advantage in financial services, CCB is keen on making use of this opportunity in organising a series of charitable activities to publicise the spirits of Special Olympics, to strengthen moral education in its staff and to appeal to public to provide more care and help to individuals with intellectual disabilities.  Since last May, CCB has launched a series of “Care for Society through Action” charitable activities in nine of its first-tier branches and its Hong Kong subsidiary.  Consequently, almost 3,000 of its outlets are involved in giving out Special Olympics Rainbow Postcards, in running the “Collection of Coins & Small Change Donation Campaign”, in issuing “Caring Credit Cards” and in helping schools for intellectually disabled children with construction projects, etc.  In addition, it has mobilised its staff to organise volunteer groups to publicise the spirits of Special Olympics to its customers so that they can have a better understanding of the plights of intellectually disabled individuals and are more willing to contribute to their causes.  As a result, innumerable customers have made generous donations.  During September 25th to 27th, CCB has organised volunteer teams to participate in the Special Olympics torch receiving and torch-run starting ceremony in Beijing as well as in the law enforcer torch runs in 11 cities, thereby providing supports to the Special Olympics through the enthusiasm and action of its staff.  Meanwhile, it has made use of the occasion to guide its staff in self-educating themselves to reinforce their own professional ethics and work responsibility, hence to the further establishment of CCB’s corporate culture.

In order to provide good financial services to Special Olympics World Summer Games 2007, CCB Shanghai Branch has provided its staff with training in Special Olympics knowledge and foreign languages.  On top of this, more than 80 Special Olympics service outlets have been set up in the vicinities of the Games stadium.  In these outlets, more than 10,000 Special Olympics service booklets have been prepared, special services in foreign currency exchange and foreign credit cards have been offered and express lanes for the convenience of Special Olympics athletes, coaches and officials have been marked out.  As well, special services for the Special Olympics have also been on offer in other CCB outlets in Shanghai.  Right now, in all CCB outlets and particularly in the Special Olympics service outlets, CCB staff members are providing enthusiastic, compassionate and professional financial services to the Special Olympics athletes and their relatives, the coaches and people from all quarters of society, thereby contributing towards financial service backup for all the competitions, exchanges and day-to-day lives surrounding the Special Olympics World Summer Games Shanghai 2007.
