The “2007 Corporate Social Responsibility and Building Harmonious Society Forum” jointly sponsored by Xinhua Net and China News Development Company was recently held in The theme of the forum was “responsibility, harmony and development”. Efforts were made to study how new ideas and means can reinforce corporate social responsibility, democracy and rule of law, equity and justice, integrity and friendship, and most of all to find a new method of building a socialistic and harmonious society in which man and nature exist harmoniously. The CCB person-in-charge in this area pointed out in the forum that while CCB insists on quality and efficiency in its development, it is deeply concerned with the interests of the nation, its shareholders, staff, customers, partners and the public. CCB is the first domestic national bank to publicly release its first corporate social responsibility report during the first half of this year. As a state-owned commercial bank, CCB always supports energy saving, pollution reduction and environment protection. To cope with the nation’s macroeconomic control policies, to pursue sustainable development and to undertake its social responsibility, CCB has been actively supporting enterprises that contribute to energy saving, pollution reduction and environment protection. However, to those enterprises that are against these values, loans are strictly controlled or “vetoed by a single environment protection ticket”. Preference is given to enterprises and projects of low energy consumption and low pollution and environment protection. Out of the 5,000 cement plants in the country, only 90 of them, less than 2% have received finance from CCB. Out of 6,000 steel manufacturers, only 80 of them, also less than 2%, are financed by CCB. Those that have received CCB support are the ones that have stringent environmental standards. The outstanding performance of CCB’s reform and development is widely recognised by the public.
